Department of CTVA: 2018-19 Scholarships and Awards Application

Note: CTVA Scholarships and Awards are open only to Department of CTVA full-time students (including Film Provisional students). The CTVA scholarship application and submission process is done entirely online. We CANNOT accept any applications or supporting files that are not submitted online.

  • The deadline to apply for all Dept. of CTVA Scholarships ancd Awards is the end of the day (11:59 pm) on Friday, March 1, 2019. No late submissions after the deadline will be accepted. 
  • Incomplete applications that are NOT completed by the deadline will be eliminated from further consideration.
  • All Scholarship and Award applicants will be contacted via email no later than MON April 1, 2019 regarding the status of your application.
  • All Scholarship and Award recipients will be celebrated at our annual Scholarships and Awards Ceremony. (Note: Date, Time, and Location are still pending.)
  • Unless otherwise specified, all scholarships and awards are for the next academic year. Scholarships and awards of $1,000 or more will be divided between the Fall and Spring semesters, unless the recipient is graduating in the Fall semester. For awards given to graduating seniors, the funds should be processed by June 30th. All other Scholarship and Award funds will be disbursed to each student's CSUN account by the end of August.
  • When you complete the online "APPLICANT INFORMATION FORM", you will be required to upload a current PDF copy of your Degree Progress Report (DPR), a current resume, JPEG photo, and a brief 1-2 paragraph bio.
  • "Financial Needs-Based" Scholarships and Awards require demonstrated financial need, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). All applicants for Financial Needs-Based scholarships and awards MUST have a FAFSA on file with the CSUN Financial Aid Office. Recipients will be pre-qualified by the CSUN Financial Aid Office and will NOT have their financial aid reduced unless the scholarship or award amount exceeds your total calculated financial need.

In order to be considered for any individual CTVA Scholarships and Awards, you MUST:

  • Complete the online "Applicant Information Form" with ALL required attachments.
  • Upload all required attachments for the scholarship(s) and award(s) for which you are applying. You can apply for any and all scholarships and awards that you qualify for. Please do NOT submit to the same scholarship category more than once. 
  • Read ALL instructions and make sure that you fit the scholarship/award qualifications before applying. Any applicants who do NOT meet the qualifications will be eliminated from further consideration.

You will also need to reference a current copy of your Degree Progress Report (DPR) in order to complete the online  "Applicant Information Form".

For individual scholarships requiring text file attachments, we accept ONLY:

For awards and scholarships that are limited to juniors or seniors (for example), the following criteria will be used to determine your class:

  • Freshman (0-30 Units completed at the time of application, excluding units in progress)
  • Sophomore (30-60 Units completed at the time of application, excluding units in progress)
  • Junior (60-90 Units completed at the time of application, excluding units in progress)
  • Senior (90 units or more completed at the time of application, excluding units in progress)

Note: In determining whether you qualify for a particular scholarship, units that are currently "in progress" can be used towards your unit total.

The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for the awards and scholarships for which you are applying is 11:59 pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship/award consideration.

Before applying for any individual scholarships, pleased complete the "Applicant Information Form" first. Note that you will be required to setup a FREE Submittable.com "User Account" before you can access the "Applicant Information Form". This account can be used to save, login, and complete/view a previously saved online application. 

As an alternative login method, you can use your Facebook account login name and password (instead of creating a FREE Submittable.com account).


You MUST complete the entire "Applicant Information Form" and upload all required attachments to be considered for any scholarships or awards. Students are encouraged to apply for any and all scholarships/awards that you qualify for.

After completing the "Applicant Information Form", students must attach supporting files as required for each individual scholarship category for which you are applying. Please do NOT submit to the same scholarship category more than once.

(1) $750 Scholarship

Financial Needs-Based Scholarship: No

Class Level: Applicant must be a continuing graduate student (not graduating in the year the scholarship is given).

Academic Achievement

  •  This is a merit based award.

Area of Emphasis

  • Graduate Screenwriting major.

Procedure for Student Application

  1. Complete      the "Applicant Information Form" available (online).
  2. Upload a feature length motion picture screenplay. In the spirit of Abraham Polonsky's personal vision and creative work, it is preferred that the screenplay engage themes of social consciousness (MS-Word or PDF).
  3. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59 pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.

(1) $700 Award

Financial Needs-Based Award: No

Class Level: Applicant must be a CTVA undergraduate student (continuing student or graduating senior).

Academic Achievement

  •  This is a merit based award.

Area of Emphasis

  • Interest in critical writing.

Procedure for Student Application

  1. Complete the "Applicant Information Form" available (online).
  2. Upload a critical essay on a film topic, no less than 10 pages in length. The essay will be judged on both the substance of the content and the clarity and insightfulness of the argument (MS-Word or PDF).
  3. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59 pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.


(1) $350 Award

Financial Needs-Based Award: No

Class Level: Applicant must be a CTVA undergraduate continuing student or graduating senior in the Screenwriting Option.

Academic Achievement

  •  This is a merit based award.

Area of Emphasis

  • Undergraduate Screenwriting major (continuing or graduating)

All applicants for this scholarship MUST have a FAFSA on file with the CSUN Financial Aid Office. Recipients of this scholarship will be pre-qualified by the CSUN Financial Aid Office and will NOT have their financial aid reduced unless the scholarship amount exceeds your total calculated financial need.

Class Level: Student must be an entering CTVA junior or senior (based on the current academic school year).

Academic Achievement

  1. Minimum 3.5 GPA in all upper division CTVA courses taken.
  2. Overall university GPA may also be taken into consideration.

Area of Emphasis

  1. Student has demonstrated an outstanding classroom record in broadcasting history and film history courses: CTVA 305 History of Broadcasting and/or CTVA 310 History of American Cinema or an equivalent media history course/s. 
  2. Student has a professional goal of a career in the media history/research area.
  3. Student must have demonstrated a serious interest in a career in media history/research.

Procedure for Student Application

  1. Complete the "Applicant Information Form" available (online).
  2. Upload a one-page composition in which you discuss why you wish to work in the field of media history/research, the work you have already done in media history/research, your employment goals over the next five years, and your specialization in your work at CSUN (MS-Word or PDF).
  3. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59 pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.

(1) $1,000 Scholarship*

Area of Emphasis

  1. Student has a professional goal of a career in Interactive Media, which includes content creation for interactive film/video, video games, Internet, and Mobile devices.  
  2. Student must have demonstrated a serious interest in a career in Interactive Media.
  3. Student must meet the University's financial need requirement.
  4. Student who have completed or are in the process of doing an internship in Interactive Media are encouraged to apply.

Procedure for Student Application

  1. Complete the "Applicant Information Form" available (online).
  2. Upload a one-page composition in which you discuss why you wish to work in the field of Interactive Media, your employment goals over the next five years, and your specialization in your work at CSUN (MS-Word or PDF).
  3. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59 pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.

  3. Student who have completed or are in the process of doing an internship in radio and/or television sports are encouraged to apply.

Procedure for Student Application

  1. Complete the "Applicant Information Form" available (online).
  2. Upload a one-page composition in which you discuss why you wish to work in the field of radio and/or television sports, any work you have already done in the field of broadcast sports, your employment goals over the next five years, and your specialization in your work at CSUN (MS-Word or PDF).
  3. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.

(5) $1,000 Scholarships

Financial Needs-Based Scholarship: No

Class Level

  • Student must be a full-time continuing undergraduate or graduate student (i.e., not graduating in Spring or Fall 2019).

Academic Achievement

  • Minimum 3.5 GPA in all upper-division CTVA courses, and a minimum 3.0 GPA for all course work taken at CSUN.

Area of Emphasis

  • All Department of CTVA Options.

Procedure for Student Application

  2. Applicant must upload a brief (500-750 word) essay on the importance of the arts in society (MS-Word or PDF).
  3. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.

(1) $1,000 Scholarship

Financial Needs-Based Scholarship: No

Class Level

  • Student must be a CTVA junior or senior in the academic year scholarship is given.

Academic Achievement

  1. Minimum 3.5 GPA in all CTVA upper division courses taken.
  2. Overall GPA in all course work taken at CSUN may also be taken into consideration.

Area of Emphasis

  1. Student has demonstrated an outstanding classroom record in audience research courses.
  2. Student must have successfully completed CTVA 475 Audience Analysis or an equivalent audience analysis course.
  3. Student has a professional goal of a career in media research.
  4. Student must have demonstrated a serious interest in a career in media research.
  5. Students who have completed or are in the process of doing an internship in media research are encouraged to apply.

Procedure for Student Application

  1. Complete the "Applicant Information Form" available (online).
  2. Upload a one-page composition in which you discuss why you wish to work in the field of audience research, the work you have already done in audience research,  your employment goals over the next five years, and your specialization in your work at CSUN (MS-Word or PDF).
  3. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59 pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.

(1) $1,250 Scholarship

Financial Needs-Based Scholarship: No

Class Level: Applicant must be a CTVA junior in the year the scholarship is awarded.

Academic Achievement

  •  Minimum 3.0 GPA for all course work taken at CSUN.

Area of Emphasis

  • Merit based scholarship for a CTVA junior. Student must plan to complete their degree at CSUN.
  • Student applicants must wish to pursue a career in teh film and television industry.
  • Additional factors such as future promise and/or other criteria deemed appropriate may also be considered.

Procedure for Student Application

  1. Complete the "Applicant Information Form" available (online).
  2. Upload a 250 word essay describing your future goals in the film and television industry (MS-Word or PDF).
  3. The professional references that you listed on the "Applicant Information Form" could be a factor in determining this scholarship award.
  4. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59 pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.


(1) $1,500 Scholarship for Film Production Option students only
Financial Needs-Based Scholarship: No
 

Class Level:

  • Must be a full-time continuing Film Production Option undergraduate student (not graduating in Spring or Fall 2019). 

Note: Film Provisional students who have not been accepted into the Film Production Option through the portfolio        process can NOT be considered for this scholarship.

  Academic Achievement

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA for all course work taken at CSUN.

  Area of Emphasis

  • Department of CTVA Film Production Option student.
  • Preference will be given to students displaying leadership skills.

  Procedure for Student Application

  1. Complete the "Applicant Information Form" available (online).
  2. Applicants must upload a brief (500-750 word) essay addressing the following statement: "Describe your unique leadership qualities and skills and discuss how they apply to your chosen discipline within film production". (MS-Word or PDF).
  3. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59 pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.


(2) $8,000 Scholarships* (one for a Film Production Option student, and one for a Television Production Option student)
Financial Needs-Based Scholarship: Yes

* This is a financial needs-based scholarship that requires demonstrated financial need, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). All applicants for this scholarship MUST have a FAFSA on file with the CSUN Financial Aid Office. Recipients of this scholarship will be pre-qualified by the CSUN Financial Aid Office and will NOT have their financial aid reduced unless the scholarship amount exceeds your total calculated financial need. Preference will be given to students from traditionally under-represented populations, and to students with demonstrated potential for success.

Note: This $8,000 scholarship will disbursed as two (2) separate $4,000 payments just prior to the start of each Fall and Spring semester. Other entertainment industry opportunities are included as part of this program.

 Class Level:

  • Must be an undergraduate student who has been admitted and enrolled in the Department of CTVA in either the Film Production Option or Television Production Option (Junior or Senior).

 Academic Achievement

  • Undergraduate students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA for all course work taken at CSUN.

 Area of Emphasis

  • Department of CTVA student who has been accepted into the Film Production Option through the portfolio process.

      - OR -

  •  Department of CTVA student in the Television Production Option who will be entering their junior or senior year in the next Fall semester.
  • The scholarship may be renewable for up to three (3) years for undergraduate students, provided they are making satisfactory progress toward their degree objective, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, and demonstrate continued financial need.

 Procedure for Student Application

  1. Complete the "Applicant Information Form" available (online).
  2. Applicants must upload a brief statement discussing your qualifications as a member of a traditionally under-represented population. (MS-Word or PDF)
  3. Applicants must upload a statement of purpose regarding your anticipated role in the entertainment industry, including your potential for success. (MS-Word or PDF)
  4. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59 pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.

(2) $1,850 Scholarship
Financial Needs-Based Scholarship: No (although financial need may be be a consideration but not a requirement).
 

Class Level:

  • Must be a full-time continuing undergraduate student entering your junior or senior year in the Fall 2019 semester. 

  Academic Achievement

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA for all course work taken at CSUN.
  • Minimum 3.5 GPA in all upper division CTVA courses.

  Area of Emphasis

  • Open to all Department of CTVA undergraduate students.
  • Preference will be given to international students although open to all.

  Procedure for Student Application

  1. Complete the "Applicant Information Form" available (online).
  2. Applicant must upload a brief (500-750 word) essay addressing the following question: "How has the study of international media affected the way you see the world and your place in it as a media professional"? (MS-Word or PDF).
  3. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59 pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.


(1) $800 Award

Financial Needs-Based Scholarship: No

Class Level

  • CTVA junior or senior in the Television Production Option in the academic year award is given.

Academic Achievement

  • Minimum 3.5 GPA for all course work taken at CSUN.

Area of Emphasis

  • Student must be a CTVA major in the Television Production Option.

Procedure for Student Application

  1. Complete the "Applicant Information Form" available (online).
  2. Upload  a resume, which includes all pertinent professional and personal information relating to the entertainment industry (MS-Word or PDF).
  3. Upload a one-page composition in which you discuss why you wish to work in television production, your employment goals over the next five years, and your specialization in your work at CSUN (MS-Word or PDF).
  4. Submit a Web URL link to a sample or your video work completed at CSUN (using web sites such as YouTube, Vimeo, etc.)
  5. The professional references that you listed on the "Applicant Information Form" could be a factor in determining this scholarship award.
  6. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59 pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.


(2) $2,500 Scholarships*

Financial Needs-Based Scholarship: Yes

* This is a financial needs-based scholarship that requires demonstrated financial need, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). All applicants for this scholarship MUST have a FAFSA on file with the CSUN Financial Aid Office. Recipients of this scholarship will be pre-qualified by the CSUN Financial Aid Office and will NOT have their financial aid reduced unless the scholarship amount exceeds your total calculated financial need.

Class Level

  • One award for a full-time continuing undergraduate student entering their junior year during the next academic school year.
  • One award for a full-time continuing undergraduate student entering their senior year during the next academic school year. 

Academic Achievement

  • Minimum 3.5 GPA in all upper-division CTVA courses, and a minimum 3.0 GPA for all course work taken at CSUN.

Area of Emphasis

  • All CTVA department options.

Procedure for Student Application

  1. Complete the "Applicant Information Form" available (online).
  2. Applicant must upload a brief (500-750 word) essay detailing how they have overcome obstacles caused by their social or economic status (MS-Word or PDF).  The essay also should detail what sort of career the applicant hopes to pursue, and how the applicant proposes to help foster diversity in the television and film arts.
  3. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59 pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.

(1) $600 Award

Financial Needs-Based Scholarship: No

Class Level: Applicant must be a CTVA senior, graduating in the academic year the award is made.

Academic Achievement

  •  Minimum 3.5 GPA in all upper division CTVA courses. 
  •  GPA in all course work taken at CSUN may also be taken into consideration.

Area of Emphasis
Service to the Department of CTVA and to the community will be a major consideration in awarding the scholarship.

Procedure for Student Application

  1. Complete the "Applicant Information Form" available (online).
  2. Upload a current resume. The resume must show the required service to the Department, University, and/or to the community (MS-Word or PDF).
  3. Upload a statement of professional goals and interests (MS-Word or PDF).
  4. The professional references that you listed on the "Applicant Information Form" could be a factor in determining this award.
  5. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.

(3) $2,500 Awards

Financial Needs-Based Scholarship: No

Class Level

  • (1) CTVA entering junior and (2) entering CTVA seniors (based on the academic year following submission).

Academic Achievement

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA in all upper division CTVA courses taken.
  • Overall GPA in all course work taken at CSUN may also be taken into consideration.

Area of Emphasis

Service to the Department and to the community will be a major consideration in awarding this scholarship.

Procedure for Student Application

  1. Complete the "Applicant Information Form" available (online).
  2. Upload a current resume which includes all pertinent professional and personal information relating in any way to service to the Department and/or community and the entertainment industry (MS-Word or PDF).
  3. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59 pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.

(2) $2,250 Scholarship

Class Level

  • Student must be a full-time continuing CTVA undergraduate student (not graduating in Spring or Fall 2019).

Academic Achievement

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA for all course work taken at CSUN.

  • All Department of CTVA Options.

Procedure for Student Application

  1. Complete the "Applicant Information Form" available (online).
  2. Applicant must upload a brief (500-750 word) essay detailing the role in the arts that you plan to pursue (MS-Word or PDF).
  3. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59 pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.

(1) $600 Scholarship

Financial Needs-Based Scholarship: No

Class Level

  1. CTVA Student must have completed at least 65 units.
  2. CTVA Student must have completed one year (2 semesters) of 30 units on the CSUN campus.
  3. CTVA Student must have at least one semester remaining to complete at CSUN, with a minimum of (6) six units needed to graduate.

Academic Achievement

  1. Minimum 3.5 GPA for all upper division CTVA courses.
  2. GPA in all course work taken at CSUN will be used as a further consideration (if necessary).

Area of Emphasis

  • Student should have demonstrated continuing interest and participation in CTVA and/or University activities.

Procedure for Student Application

  2. Upload a resume, which includes all pertinent professional and personal information relating in any way to your CTVA/University activities and the entertainment industry (MS-Word or PDF).
  3. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59 pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.

Upload a file (MS-Word, PDF, JPEG, TIFF, PNG, WAV, MP3, MP4, or MOV) or provide a Web URL link (YouTube, Vimeo, Box.com, etc.) to a single project completed at CSUN that embodies a clear vision of the future of the entertainment industry (for example, multimedia presentation, marketing plan, critical essay, screenplay, film, television, or other media project).
  3. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59 pm on March 3, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.


(3) $5,000 Scholarships*

Financial Needs-Based Scholarship: Yes

* This is a financial needs-based scholarship that requires demonstrated financial need, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). All applicants for this scholarship MUST have a FAFSA on file with the CSUN Financial Aid Office. Recipients of this scholarship will be pre-qualified by the CSUN Financial Aid Office and will NOT have their financial aid reduced unless the scholarship amount exceeds your total calculated financial need.

Class Level

  • Student must be a CTVA junior (with two full remaining semesters at CSUN after this 2018-19 academic year).

Academic Achievement

  1. Minimum 2.5 GPA in all upper division CTVA courses taken.
  2. GPA in all course work taken at CSUN may also be taken into consideration.

Area of Emphasis

  1. The best candidates are those who have blossomed at CSUN and have found focus and direction through their work in the Department of Cinema and Television Arts.
  2. The intention of this scholarship award is to both reward and assist a student with a monetary gift that ensures that the student is able to complete their degree.

  2. Upload a current resume (MS-Word or PDF).
  3. Upload a (1 page) statement of professional goals and interests (MS-Word or PDF).
  4. Upload an essay, no longer than 2 single-spaced pages answering the following question: How has being a student in the Department of CTVA at CSUN helped you to find your passion and altered your focus and direction in your life and career? (MS-Word or PDF).
  5. The deadline to submit the "Applicant Information Form" and upload the required attachments for this scholarship is 11:59 pm on March 1, 2019. After this date, no other submissions will be accepted. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline will cause your application to be excluded from scholarship consideration.

  • Student must be a CTVA junior or senior in the academic year the scholarship is awarded.

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA in all upper division CTVA courses taken.

  • Preference is for female applicants.
